Harrison Township, in which Fort McKinley lies, was settled by squatters at the turn of the 19th century. The first resident of the area was William King, a squatter from Kentucky. The township’s first school house was made of log and was built in 1810 on the McConnell Farm. Beginning in 1868, many annexations of Harrison Township to the city of Dayton took place and lasted through the 1970s. In 1988, the City of Dayton proposed the consolidation of Harrison and Jefferson townships in the city but the proposal was unsuccessful.
